Why did insurance companies partner with Nest?
Insurance companies want to help keep you and your home safe. According to the NFPA, 60% of civilian fire fatalities in the United States occurred in homes without a working smoke alarm. And 70% of smoke alarms fail to operate because of missing or dead batteries.
How Nest Protect helps keep you safer
Many smoke alarms get ripped off the ceiling because of their annoying low battery chirps. They can drive you crazy. And if your smoke alarm isn't working, your home and your family aren't protected. Nest Protect was designed not to be annoying. Long before it has to chirp, Nest Protect tells you its batteries are running low by sending a message to your phone and speaking to you.
Nest Protect can also help you know what's going on at home even when you aren't there. You can have alerts sent to your phone if Nest Protect detects if there is a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm. Nest's mobile alerts give you the notice you need to call an emergency contact or emergency services to address the problem — even if you're not at home.
How will my insurance company know that I have a working Nest Protect?
Nest Protect tests itself to make sure that the batteries have power, that the sensors are working, and that it's connected to Wi-Fi. Nest Protect can also tell you when these tests succeed and when they don't.
When you enroll in Safety Rewards you'll be asked to grant Nest permission to provide basic summarized information about your Nest Protect to your insurance company. This will show they're working to help keep you and your home safe. Each month, Nest will summarize and send your Nest Protect data to your insurance company. This summary includes status of the batteries, smoke sensor, carbon monoxide sensor, and connection to the Internet. You can also see this information in the Nest app and in your monthly Home Report.

How is Safety Rewards different?
Not all companies think the way we do about our customers' information. With Safety Rewards, we've taken a very conservative approach to the data we allow you to share because we believe keeping your home safe and comfortable shouldn't come at the cost of your privacy.
Your trust is important to us. This is why Nest took a different approach to Safety Rewards. We asked what is the minimum amount of information that would help you show your insurance company that you have a working Nest Protect in your home. And we'll make sure that you'll always be in control of what data you choose to share.
