Article Summary:
Under normal conditions, the Nest Learning Thermostat charges its battery from the low voltage wires on your heating and cooling system. But if there’s a wiring problem or an extended power outage and the battery level gets low, the Nest Thermostat will turn off Wi-Fi to conserve power.

When this happens, the Nest Thermostat will continue to recharge its battery from the low-voltage wires and will reconnect to the Internet automatically once its fully charged. If the battery charge is very low, it might take as long as a couple of hours for Nest to reconnect.

You will not be able to access or control your Nest Thermostat from the Nest app or from the Web until it reconnects. When you log in, any thermostat that is not connected will be grey and say OFFLINE.

To verify that your Nest Thermostat has lost its connection to the Internet because of a low battery level, look at the Network settings screen on your thermostat.

Follow these steps to get there:

  • Press the ring to bring up the menu
  • Turn to SETTINGS and press again to select
  • Turn the ring to NETWORK

If this is the issue, you’ll see the following message:

If your Nest Thermostat doesn’t reconnect automatically, you can reconnect to your Wi-Fi network in the Network settings.
