Article Summary:
Each generation Nest Thermostat has its own unique hardware design that’s improved over the previous generation – inside and out – and will only work with its own parts. This means that the different generations of Nest Thermostat bases and displays aren’t interchangeable.

For example, the 3rd generation Nest display only works with the 3rd generation Nest base — so a 1st or 2nd generation display can’t be used with a 3rd generation base or vice versa.

As an example, you can see from the images below that the pin connector is shaped differently:

Keep in mind that there are two different designs for the 1st generation Nest base. Don’t worry, the 1st generation display will work with either 1st generation base. Here’s a picture of the two different 1st generation bases.

The connectors were redesigned to be easier to use but nothing else was changed, so both can use the same base and display.
