Article Summary:
Nest Sense uses its unique Auto-Schedule feature to create a comfortable temperature schedule from the changes you make to the temperature in your home or business.

How it works

The Nest Learning Thermostat’s Auto-Schedule uses a series of algorithms and weighted pattern-recognition to create a temperature schedule. At first, every adjustment you make is incorporated into the schedule, but over time your Nest Thermostat will only incorporate patterns of changes.

The Nest Thermostat listens attentively to your changes at first, but later on - when your schedule is set and initial learning is complete - you’ll need to make an adjustment on more than one day to have an effect.

For example, if you start getting up half an hour earlier and adjust the thermostat each day, the Nest Thermostat will soon learn this new pattern and change your schedule’s morning target temperature.

What happens if I make manual adjustments to my schedule?

If you want, you can add new target temperatures, and remove or change existing ones on the Nest Thermostat, with the Nest app or on the Web. Once you’ve made manual schedule changes, Auto-Schedule continues learning but the target temperatures you’ve created or adjusted will not be changed.

On the thermostat:

  • Press the ring and choose SCHEDULE.
  • Turn the ring and press to pick a time to add a new temperature or select an existing one to adjust or delete it.

With the Nest app or on the Web:

  • Choose the thermostat you want to adjust.
  • Click or tap the menu icon in the top right corner.
  • Select SCHEDULE.
  • Pick a time to add a new temperature or select an existing one to adjust or delete it.

Some facts about how Auto-Schedule works

  • Auto-Schedule chooses temperatures that have been set by a person at least once.
  • If you make similar adjustments on a couple days in a row, Auto-Schedule will match these adjustments to one another and create temperature setpoints accordingly.
  • Auto-Schedule uses pattern-matching to determine if that’s what you want on each day, each weekday, or the same day each week.
  • Temperature changes you make on the thermostat, with the Nest app, or on the Web have exactly the same effect on the schedule.
  • If you don’t like a temperature that your Nest Thermostat is set to, you can either teach your Nest Thermostat to adjust the temperature by turning the ring or change it directly in the schedule.
  • Manual changes you make to the schedule won’t be affected by Auto-Schedule.

I don’t want my temperature schedule to change

If you want to set a schedule and have your Nest Thermostat follow exactly that schedule from now on, you can turn off Auto-Schedule. The Nest Thermostat won’t change things over the seasons or adapt the schedule according to your adjustments - it will behave as a programmable thermostat.
