Article Summary:
The free Nest app lets you set up your Nest products, see their status, change their settings and more. Here’s an introduction to the basics.

Nest helps you stay connected no matter where you are or what kind of device you're using. Creating a Nest Account and using the Nest app gives you greater control over your Nest products and deeper insight into your home's energy use and safety record, and helps you keep an eye on things while you're away.

The Nest app gives you full access to all of your Nest products anywhere you have an Internet connection. For instance, you can change the temperature or view your energy usage on your Nest Thermostat, get smoke and carbon monoxide alerts from your Nest Protect, watch Nest Cam video footage, and much more. All in one place.

To use the Nest app, you'll need:

  • A free Nest Account. If you don't have one yet, you can create one directly on the app's login screen.
  • At least one Nest product.
  • A Wi-Fi network that your Nest products will use to connect to the Internet.

When you log into your Nest Account, you may see one or more messages about your Nest products. It might be a message from your Nest Thermostat reminding you that it's time to change your system's air filter. Or it could be a message from Nest Protect telling you that its battery is getting low.

You can manage your messages with the Nest app on your phone, tablet, or computer. Messages deleted in the Nest app will be removed the next time you log into your account on the Web.

If a message is important or requires your attention, you'll also get a notification on your phone or tablet. Of course, you'll need to have the Nest app installed on your phone or tablet. Your Nest products must also be connected to Wi-Fi.

Some examples of messages that would also send a notification to your phone or tablet include:

  • If your Nest Protect has detected smoke or carbon monoxide
  • If your Nest Learning Thermostat has adjusted your current target temperature because of a Rush Hour Rewards event
