Article Summary:
During setup, Nest Protect will attempt to connect to the Internet once you’ve selected your Wi-Fi network and entered your Wi-Fi password. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can take if Nest Protect is unable to connect.

The first thing to try is entering your password again.

Be careful to correctly enter uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols as needed. The Nest app can switch between four different keyboards to enter these characters.

If the other devices can’t connect either, your wireless access point may be offline or there may be a problem with it.

Contact your access point manufacturer or ISP (Internet Service Provider) for further troubleshooting.

Refer to the access point’s documentation for instructions on how to do this.

Successfully connecting without it enabled means that you’ve entered the Nest MAC address incorrectly (or not at all).

If you use MAC address filtering to help secure your wireless network, you’ll need to add the Nest Protect MAC address to your access control list. Every device is different, so you’ll need to refer to your documentation for how to do this.

While most devices just need to be unplugged and plugged back in to restart them, you should refer to your documentation for specific instructions.

Once your wireless access point finishes restarting, verify that its working by connecting to its Wi-Fi network with a computer or mobile device and visiting http://nest.com.

If you purchased the device through your Internet service provider (ISP), please contact the ISP’s technical support to confirm that all firmware is up to date.

If you purchased the wireless access point yourself, refer to the manufacturer's technical support documentation and online resources for instructions to update firmware.

1) Enter your Wi-Fi password again.

If you’ve entered your password incorrectly during setup, the Nest app will give you an error message.

2) Is your wireless access point connected to the Internet?

Once you’ve tried re-entering your password, you should try connecting to your Wi-Fi network with another device (mobile phone or portable computer).

3) Is DHCP enabled on the wireless access point?

Enable DHCP on your wireless access point and make sure there are enough IP addresses available to hand out.

4) Turn off MAC address filtering on your Wi-Fi access point (if it’s currently on).

If you have MAC address filtering enabled on your Wi-Fi router, you should try temporarily disabling this feature.

5) Restart your wireless access point.

If that doesn’t work, try restarting your access point.

6) Is your wireless access point firmware up-to-date?

Some Wi-Fi features may not be fully supported by all access points. One way to resolve this issue is to update to the latest firmware version.
