Article Summary:
We recommend that you test your heating and cooling system during setup to make sure that all systems are working correctly after installation. You can also test your system at any time by running the System Test in Equipment in Settings.

How to test your system during setup

Testing your system during setup can help you catch incorrect wiring, blown fuses or other installation issues early. System Test helps make sure that your system is set up and connected correctly. You can easily check for any problems during setup, or anytime you like.

To test your system during setup, simply choose TEST NOW when you see the option.

Note: If it's too hot or cold out for a system test, you can test your system later in EQUIPMENT>>SETTINGS.

How to test your system after setup

It's also a good idea to test your system before the seasons change and you'll rely on heating or cooling for that season. Test heating on a cool day at the end of the summer to make sure it's working before that first cold snap hits. In the spring, you should also test cooling on a warm day before the first heat wave of the summer. That way, you'll be confident that your system is in good shape - and if something's wrong, you won't have to wait for an appointment with a professional who's fully booked when everyone turns on heating or cooling for the first time. If you need to test your system anytime after setup, it's easy to do.

Here's how:

You can select a specific system function to test.

Note: Depending on your heating or cooling, you may have to wait 30 minutes or more for a noticeable temperature change. In-floor radiant systems in particular can take a while to warm up.

If during the test you notice that your system isn't working properly (heat isn't coming on during heating test), select TROUBLESHOOT on the thermostat screen and press the ring.

Choose the SETTINGS icon from the Quick View screen.

Go to EQUIPMENT.

You'll see the wires that the Nest Thermostat has detected. Select CONTINUE.

Next you'll see the system components that you can test. Select TEST to enter testing or CONTINUE to go back to Equipment Settings.

The system testing will begin.

Once the test is done, press the thermostat ring to continue.
