And like any good assistant, Auto-Tune knows you’re in control. If you don’t like a temperature that Auto-Tune has set, you can simply change the temperature - the Nest Thermostat will stick to that temperature and Auto-Tune will learn to be less aggressive in the future.
What does Auto-Tune do today?
Auto-Tune powers two Nest services available to customers of Nest’s energy partners: Rush Hour Rewards, which tweaks temperatures so you earn maximum rewards from your energy provider, and Seasonal Savings, which fine-tunes your schedule over several weeks and has helped Nest Thermostat owners save 5-30% more energy for the season.
Both services use Auto-Tune to automatically adjust temperatures to maximize the benefits to you, while keeping you comfortable. The goal of Auto-Tune is to make changes as imperceptible as possible, finding the right balance between savings and comfort. And with all Auto-Tune features, you can take control of your thermostat by simply changing the temperature.
Whenever Rush Hour Rewards or Seasonal Savings is tweaking temperatures to help you save, the gold Auto-Tune icon (
) will appear on the Nest Thermostat, Nest app and the Web.
What else can Auto-Tune do?
While today Auto-Tune only powers Seasonal Savings and Rush Hour Rewards, Auto-Tune is capable of much more. Through Auto-Tune, we can bring features like time-of-use energy management, instant peak saving, and even energy budgeting.

You can only get Rush Hour Rewards and Seasonal Savings if you sign up with one of Nest’s energy partners.
That’s because our energy partners are helping to subsidize all the processing power required to implement Auto-Tune.
Auto-Tune needs a huge amount of memory, storage and processing power, all maintained in the cloud. It takes all of your Nest Thermostat's knowledge into account before it makes even a small change to your schedule. That includes your temperature preferences, schedule, occupancy info and weather - everything your Nest Thermostat has learned about you plus real-time data about the temperature.
Maintaining all this data is expensive, and by partnering with energy providers we don’t have to pass the cost on to our customers.
