You can install Nest Protect without a smartphone or tablet and it will function as a stand-alone smoke and carbon monoxide alarm.
Nest Protect will work out of the box as a stand alone smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarm. In order to take advantage of all the Nest Protect features, you’ll need a supported smartphone or tablet, the Nest Mobile app, and Wi-Fi.

If you don’t complete setup with the Nest Mobile app, the following features will not be available:
- Wireless interconnect between your Nest Protects
- Personalizing your Nest Protect settings
- Naming of your Nest Protects
- Turn settings on or off
- View technical info
- Remote access to view the status of your Nest Protects
- Mobile notifications
- Automatic software updates
If you don’t have a supported smartphone or tablet, you can install Nest Protect but it will not be interconnected or associated with a Nest Account. If you decide to do this, check with your local fire department to make sure local codes do not require interconnected alarms.
Can I borrow a smartphone or tablet just for setup?
If you have temporary access to a supported smartphone or tablet:
- You can set up your Nest Protects
- Interconnect the alarms
- Connect them to Wi-Fi
- Use the Nest Web app to view and adjust settings moving forward
